It is because of you, our community, supporting us through donations, and fundraising events like our 50/50 raffles, that we can help as many animals as we have!

During the last few months of 2020, and the first few months of 2021, we have been overwhelmed with the support and enthusiasm our community has shown for our shadow cats, many of whom have been adopted! A shadow cat is typically one that has been trapped from outside and fears humans; once they come into a foster home, they usually hide under the beds, behind the couches, "in the shadows" to feel safe. The street can be a tough place for cats, many have been chased out of gardens, spayed with hoses, yelled at, and sometimes worse; so they only see humans as scary. We aim to change their minds!

We love working with our shadow cats, and providing them with second chances to learn to trust humans, and enjoy life as an indoor cat; no more foraging for food, risking life to cross busy roads, and fighting for territory against other stray cats or local wild life! With patience, routine, love, and acceptance, many shadow cats learn to see the good in humans, the enjoyment from getting pet or brushed, playing with lasers or wand toys.

Some great stories of success have been Chippy; a sweet tabby who was in one of our enclosures for a long time but always so shy, before we moved her into a foster home with other cats, thinking she would be lonely without a feline friend; but we recently moved her to a foster home on her own, and she has BLOSSOMED into a sweet, rollie-pollie girl!  What about Petalthorne; she was a 16 week old kitten in a Quebec shelter labelled "feral" and on a euthanasia list before we stepped in; it took a long time in foster care, but she is now happily adopted in a new home with her new feline brother!

The Mississauga Humane Society has a number of cats in our care that have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV); basically defined, it is a medical condition that reduces the cat's immune system, leaving them vulnerable to harmless/common viruses, bacteria, and others that lead to severe medical illness.

Many of our FIV+ cats suffer from stomatitis; their entire mouth, not just their gums (gingivitis) are inflamed and sore requiring consistent monitoring by our vets, medications, and dental surgeries in some cases to remove damaged teeth.

You may recognize some of their names from our social media postings including Manor, Atlas, Tiger, DD, Charles, and Wyatt.

One of the most known, and exciting parts of our animal care is rescuing kittens and their mothers from the streets, and getting everyone into warm and safe homes! Everyone loves to see the images of happy, playful kittens in their foster homes but many of them come from difficult pasts.

2021's first two mothers, Bond and Amelia, were rescued JUST in time; both going into labor within days of coming into care! Bond did a fantastic job, and had 5 healthy babies! They are enjoying life in their foster home, together, and we will be keeping them until the kittens are about 10-12 weeks old and ready for their own homes!

All of our animals get vaccinated, dewormed, spayed/neutered, SNAP tested (FIV and FeLV test), and mircochipped. Typically we wait to fix and mircochip our kittens until they are 6-8 months; as part of our adoption contract, the kitten comes back to our vet for the procedure and it is covered in the cost of the adoption fee.

We were so fortunate to be able to welcome two happy, spunky dogs from Costa Rica right before the first lock down in 2020; they have since found their forever homes and are thriving, enjoying life in Canada!

We have been working with a handful of medically intense dogs over the last year and a half; working with their fosters, we have helped a number of dogs diagnosed with diabetes that need daily medication and special food to ensure their optimal health.

We had a number of behaviour issue dogs as well, some with bite histories; meaning they have bitten a person. These dogs are challenging to place; they need support from their fosters with training routines, behaviour work to over come the issues that caused the bite, and require specific and experienced homes to be able to learn and grow from their past to become confident, safe members of a family and their community.
